The Large Binocular Telescope represents a major advance in astronomical research capabilities. Currently operating every night of the year possible, the LBT, located on Mt Graham near Safford, Arizona, is the largest optical/infrared telescope in the world. With its two 8.4m mirrors on a common mount that can be combined to form an interferometer with a baseline of 23m, complemented with adaptive secondary mirrors, the LBT provides unprecedented ground-based resolution at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths.
LBTO is recruiting an Observatory Assistant Manager who will work with the Observatory Manager and Assistant Managers to plan, organize, prioritize, supervise, and participate in the activities at the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory. The incumbent will supervise and work with employees in the preparation, calibration, and maintenance of the telescope and ensure the proper safety, care, maintenance, and operation of the related observatory equipment. Additionally, the Assistant Manager will coordinate with the Observatory Manager to ensure proper engineering and science applications. Typical classifications supervised are Mechanical, Maintenance, and Electrical Technicians, Program Coordinator, and Administrative Assistant.
This position requires staying at the observatory for at least 4 days and 3 nights per week. It will require working weekends.
Additional shift work may be required to handle unforeseen situations involving telescope and observatory readiness for observing. The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) is located on Mt. Graham in Southeast Arizona. The position will be based in Safford, AZ, with most of the time spent at the observatory site on Mt Graham (3200m).
