With its two 8.4m mirrors on a common mount that can be combined to form an interferometer with a baseline of 23m, complemented with adaptive secondary mirrors, the LBT provides unprecedented ground-based resolution at near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. With a suite of state of the art instruments nearing completion, the observatory is moving to full operation while adding new capabilities such as ground-layer AO and new AO-fed instrumentation.
LBTO is recruiting a Safety Manager/Engineer to promote the protection of people, property, and the environment by providing overall leadership, professional knowledge and experience in the administration and support of safety processes for all aspects of the observatory.
Job description
• Inspires the observatory staff to value safety and manage all risks in their area of responsibility.
• Ensures necessary reporting requirements are met regarding risk management, safety, workers compensation, security, and environmental compliance.
• Monitors and/or organizes required employee training and maintenance of records within areas of responsibility.
• Leads the observatory’s progress of continuous improvement in safety.
• Researches information regarding new legislation, regulations, and statutes, and determines applicability to the organization.
• Develops, reviews, and advises of the integration of SHE systems and SHE safety requirements in design hazard analysis processes, bid documents, project procedures and policies, contractor safety plans, preparation of commissioning and operations, Job Hazard Analyses, and other documentation, systems, and procedures.
Requirements
• B.S. in Engineering or Occupational Safety preferred
• Fifteen or more years of experience in Safety, Health, and Environmental management.
• Professional membership of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is desired.
• Experience and knowledge of design, construction, and operational safety, engineering concepts, OSHA safety requirements and practices, technical writing and emergency response.
• Observatory facilities infrastructure experience is highly desired.
• Must have the ability to effectively interact with the Observatory Director, all levels of management and staff, as well as vendors, contractors and others, to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.
The Safety Manager/Engineer will report to the Director. The position will be based in Safford, AZ, with most of the time spent at the observatory site on Mt Graham (3200m). It will require occasional travel to the Tucson-based observatory headquarters on the campus of the University of Arizona.
